Born again

1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

What does it mean to be born again? I think to answer that question, we will need to define what it means to be born. Now, we know what birth is. It is the creation of a new being through the natural process. However, we want to focus in on the word “new.”

When something is born, it is new to this world. It has never known heartache. It has never lost a friend or been hurt. It has never known what it’s like to be in a romantic relationship. It is new. It hasn’t had to deal with the realities of life that sometimes make us cry or want to give up. It is something pure.

So what does it mean to be born again? It means that we are made into something new once again. In this case, it is not physically new, but spiritually new. God takes the old us and makes us into a new person. He takes the terrible things we’ve done and throws them away. He washes clean the stains of our muddy lives and instead leaves perfection. In short, we are born again.

This is what it means to be a Christian. Christianity is not a free ticket to heaven. It’s not a “Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free” card. It is submitting ourselves to the one who can make us into something new. It is crying out for forgiveness to the one that can wipe away all of our mistakes. It is falling at the foot of the cross that Christ died on to make us alive.

This week, if you haven’t experienced the newness that comes from submitting to God as your Lord and Savior, then do not wait. Only Christ can cause you to become new. If you have been born again, share with others the tremendous transformation you have experienced.
